Do you ever walk into a room, stop, and wonder how it got so cluttered? More importantly, do you realize how damaging a cluttered home can be to your mental state of mind? It’s true; when you compare a clean, organized home to one that is dirty and untidy, the results are worlds apart.

Clutter and chaos go hand in hand; where there is disorder in the home (and piles of it), there is a sense of mayhem. A neat and tidy home, on the other hand, brings about calmness and peace of mind to those who live there, as well as those who visit. So how do you un-clutter your home? Firstly, you need to identify the different forms of clutter in order to tackle each one. Here’s a look at the most common kinds of clutter found in homes.

1. Unwanted/Unused Things

Look around the room; how many useless things do you have lying around? They could be anything from old plants pots to non-working electronics. These are things that have served their purpose and can now be parted with. The biggest mistake homeowners make is bringing in new things without getting rid of the old, unused items. This is where clutter begins.

2. Duplicate Items

Having a spare or duplicates of a particular item is convenient; however, you have to know where to draw the line. After all, too much of anything is never a good thing. In addition to that, how you store your spare items is important so that they don’t get in the way or cause clutter. For example, if you have a spare mop, it makes sense to use just one until it is worn out, before moving on to the new one. In the meantime, your spare mop can be stored away in the garage, basement or on the loft.

3. Disorganized Spaces

Sometimes you may have everything you need in the right place, just not in order. This too can appear as clutter because nothing is kept neatly. Similarly, there may be too many items (though wanted or useful) on a single shelf or table and hence, turns it into a cluttered space. Be practical; keep frequently used things within reach on in plain sight, while other rarely used items can be stored away in boxes or containers and placed on bottom/top shelves in cupboards or cabinets.

4. Excess Personal Items

Clothes, shoes, accessories and other personal items; it’s safe to say we all have one too many personal items cluttering our bedrooms, and maybe even the entire house! If you take a look at your wardrobe, you’ll find plenty of old clothes that you’re never going to use again just taking up space in there. This is one of the main reasons why clothes lie around the room because there’s simply no space to accommodate them all. It’s the same case where shoe racks and dressers/drawers are concerned; there is so much of stuff cluttering our storage spaces that the personal items we actually use end up cluttering the places they shouldn’t even be in.

In a nutshell, clutter starts with the accumulation of things we don’t need or use. Do away with the sentimental attachment you have towards them and you’ll have no trouble de-cluttering your home!
