Considering the number of times you use it, you would think that your kitchen sink is relatively clean. However, letting the water run down the drain throughout the day will not cut it with germs and bacteria. To keep your home free of dangerous bacteria and harmful germs,  it is time to consider sanitizing your kitchen sink!

So, what do you use to clean and sanitize your sink?

To keep your utensils, plates, and bowls bacteria- and germ-free, your kitchen sink needs to have cleaning and sanitation tasks done regularly.

Check out our easy-to-follow, step-by-step method to get your kitchen sink and disposal clean and sanitized, without using harmful chemicals or cleaning solutions.

How to Clean and Sanitize Your Kitchen Sink

Materials You Need:

  • Baking Soda
  • Distilled White Vinegar
  • Paper Towels

Tools You Will Use:

  • Old toothbrush
  • Soft sponge

Important Note:

  • You can use a mild soap and nylon sponge or soft rag to wipe your sink down for daily cleaning.
  • You may also use an All-purpose or glass cleaner in a pinch. However, it is crucial that you avoid ammonia, bleach, or rough, abrasive cleaners on stainless steel sinks.  You should also avoid using abrasive sponges. All of those things can alter and damage the sink's finish.

Instructions:

  1. Fully rinse out your kitchen sink. If you have a stainless steel sink, the salt and acid in food can potentially damage its finish. So, it is important to rinse food and liquids to prevent pitting.
  2. Next, sprinkle baking soda onto the surface of the kitchen sink. Working it into a paste, then rinse it thoroughly.
  3. After that, line the sink with paper towels previously soaked in white vinegar. Acetic acid or white vinegar is a great disinfectant. It also acts as a deodorizer and cuts grease. Allow the paper towels to rest for about 20 minutes. Then, dispose of the paper towels.
  4. Next, rinse and wash the sink with warm soapy water.
  5. For the sink's faucets and handles, clean and wipe them with a mild soapy solution. Make use of an old toothbrush to get in the hard-to-reach areas. If spots remain, use a cloth soaked in white vinegar instead.
  6. Once you are finished cleaning, rinse it once more and dry with a soft rag. Your sink should now be fresh and clean!

Okay, now that you are knowledgeable about how to clean and sanitize your kitchen sink, here are some tips to maintain your kitchen sink, just like it is brand new.

Easy Tips to Maintain your Kitchen Sink

Protect it from Permanent Scratches and Stains.

It is a real achievement if you maintain a scratch and stain-free kitchen sink. Also, replacing your kitchen sink can leave a substantial impact on your wallet. So, here a few things you can do to keep your kitchen sink in pristine, tip-top condition:

  • Place a perforated plastic covering at the bottom of your kitchen sink. It will protect its surface from gaining mars and scratches as well as protect your dishes at the same time.
  • If you have a porcelain enamel sink, never let fruits,  vinegar, or other acidic foodstuffs remain on its surface. Long-term exposure to acids can induce staining and could permanently etch on its surface.

If you already have stains on your kitchen sink, do not fret. Here is a sure-fire remedy for it. Effortlessly erase stain spots using a paste made out of one-half (1/2) cup of powdered borax and the juice from one-half (1/2) lemon. Using a damp sponge, place a small amount of the mixture onto the stain spot. Rub, rinse, and wash with running water

Whether your sink is porcelain enamel, stainless steel, or any other material, we guarantee that it will work like a charm!

Deal and Control Rust Formation.

To deal with rust forming on your stainless steel kitchen sink, just wipe WD-40 on the rusty spot with a cloth and then rinse thoroughly. If you do not have WD-40 handy, you can also use lighter fluid or coke cola as an alternative. Now for rust stains on porcelain enamel sinks, just put salt on half of a lemon and rub it on the stain. Following these steps will keep rust at bay, and will maintain your kitchen sink's pristine condition.

Keep your sink's drain clog-free.

Following these simple-to-follow steps should keep your sink drains clog-free!

Combine:

  • One (1) cup of baking soda
  • One (1) cup of salt
  • 1/4 cup cream of tartar.

Once done, keep the mixture in an airtight, childproof and sealed container. Every few weeks, pour about 1/2 cup of the mixture down your sink's drain and followed it by a quart of boiling water.
