You may have things that no longer serve any purpose around the house, but you still have trouble throwing it away. You may think it’s “still OK,” or “might come in handy later," but in extreme cases, this might lead to hoarding. If you’re creative enough, you can solve the problem with some repurposing wall shelving ideas.

Lacking enough bookshelves, but loaded with other things and trying to lessen expenses? Why not wake your artistic persona up? Let's apply the 3 R's of waste management into this creative craft. Reduce your costs. Reuse and Recycle other stuff in your home and turn into shelves.

Here are five DIY shelf ideas you can do at home!

Shelves made of (wooden) crates.

To do this easy project, all you need are wooden crates, screws, and anchors, sandpaper, wood stain, and cloth. There's no need to cut anything, and all you have to do is mount these crates on the wall, but first, you need to stain them.

If you want a large wall unit, you can put together lots of crates, and they don't need to be in the same dimensions. You just have to combine them like pieces of a puzzle to obtain a beautiful composition at the end. To form a tower unit, you can stack a bunch of wooden crates. You can even put separators in each to get more shelves, and the result will look like a simple shelving unit.

Turn your old ladder into a bookshelf.

Ladders are a versatile structure. From a shoe rack to a bookcase, you can turn this item into any exciting thing.  All you have to do is re-attach pieces of woods to the structure, design or repaint it up, and you're good to go!

You may want to involve your kids in this project. Aside from having loads of fun, and connecting with your kids, you also want them to learn things outside of school. You want to show them the importance of reducing by recycling and reusing by making something unusual from an old household item.

Use shutters as a shelf.

Who would have thought that shutters can be used as a shelf? You can transform it into a cupboard or bookcase, depending on what you need the most. There are endless design possibilities to choose from. For example, with small alterations, it can allow you to use a shutter as a magazine rack or, you can apply a more drastic transformation to achieve a different but just as exciting type of shelf.

Old books into shelves.

You can put your old books to work on your walls as shelves. You can hang them in various places to build a unique-looking showcase for your lightweight yet whimsical collectibles. If you want to know how to do this project, here's how the process goes: drill some holes in the corners of your books.

You should cover them in wrapping paper then apply a thin layer of mod podge. After letting it dry, poke holes through the paper to match those in the books. You can now measure the twine, cut it and thread it through the holes. Tie four knots and repeat the process for the second book.  You can then add your third book then tie a knot at the top.

Salvaged drawers as a bookcase.

Over the years of remodeling houses, there are things that you can learn from it. If you're that type of person who doesn't throw stuff away unless it's damaged beyond repair, this DIY bookcase is an excellent example for you. So, if you have old drawers that you don’t think you could use for anything, you can stack them together and voila! You have an awesome looking (and functional) bookcase.
